Q My wife and I will be travelling to Tibet in April next year. Can Everest Base Camp tours be arranged in Lhasa once we arrive there? We would also like to travel by train to Beijing. G. Luck

AYou could find several operators in Lhasa but the China National Tourist Office (02 9252 9838) recommends that you book well in advance for tours to the mountain base and also for your train journey, as spaces are difficult to secure at short notice.

There are a number of China/Tibet tour operators in Australia who can help, including Wendy Wu Tours (www.wendywutours.com). The company said it can arrange your travel to Base Camp or extend its independent package called the Tibetan Short Stay (which tours in and around Lhasa) to include Everest Base Camp.

There are also several group tours that include Everest Base Camp, such as the Himalayan Adventure tour which visits Base Camp en route to Lhasa and Kathmandu.

If you do want to take your chances with last-minute arrangements, try the Lhasa-based Tibetan Expeditions. Their address is 100 Beijing Dong Lu.

See www.tibetanexpeditions.com or phone +86891 6330489.

You can travel from Lhasa to Qinghai and then on to Beijing by rail.

Book an early morning departure from Lhasa for the best views of the scenery across the Tibetan Plateau. Rail accommodation is based on a four-berth sleeper.
